Golden Circle: self-drive guide
The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most popular self-drive day loop from Reykjavik - Þingvellir, the Geysir hot springs and the Gullfoss waterfall - about 250-300 km on fully paved roads, no 4x4 needed. Collect an all-inclusive car at Keflavik Airport or in Reykjavik; zero-excess cover handles Iceland’s gravel and weather.
The Golden Circle is the classic first day of an Iceland road trip: three headline sights - Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area and the Gullfoss waterfall - linked by an easy, fully paved loop you can drive in a day from Reykjavik.
It is the perfect self-drive introduction: no F-roads and no 4x4, just a relaxed circuit at your own pace. An all-inclusive Cardamar rental with zero excess takes the worry out of Iceland’s gravel shoulders and fast-changing weather.
Good to know
| Distance | ~250-300 km round trip from Reykjavik |
|---|---|
| Driving time | ~3.5-4 hours plus stops (a full day) |
| Start / end | Reykjavik (or Keflavik Airport) |
| Road type | Fully paved - no 4x4 needed |
| Best season | Year-round; summer for long daylight |
The three Golden Circle stops
Þingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart and Iceland’s first parliament met in 930 AD. Then the Geysir geothermal field, where the Strokkur spout erupts every few minutes. Finally Gullfoss, a thundering two-tier waterfall in a rugged canyon.
Easy add-ons just off the loop: the Kerið crater lake, the tomato-farm café at Friðheimar, or a soak in the Secret Lagoon.
Driving the loop
The route follows paved Routes 36, 35 and 1 and needs no 4x4 - a standard car is fine year-round, with winter tyres in the colder months. Allow a full day with stops; in summer the long daylight lets you start late and avoid the tour-bus crowds.
Headlights must be on day and night, fill up before you leave the city, and take care on the gravel pull-offs at viewpoints - the most common place to chip a windscreen.
Where to rent and why zero excess matters
Most drivers collect the car at Keflavik Airport (KEF) on arrival or in central Reykjavik, then start the loop. An all-inclusive Cardamar booking, handled by Sunny Cars, includes full insurance and zero excess - and on Iceland’s gravel and ash that is worth far more than at a typical sun-coast destination.
Confirm the Iceland-specific terms (gravel and sand-and-ash cover) at booking; with zero excess a flying stone chip on the Golden Circle costs you nothing.
All-inclusive vs. a cheap basic rate plus counter insurance
Two cars on the same lot in Golden Circle can advertise very different prices. The gap is almost always insurance: an all-inclusive rate settles it up front, while a "basic" rate leaves you to buy excess cover at the desk. Here is what each really means.
| All-inclusive (Cardamar) | Basic rate + counter insurance | |
|---|---|---|
| Damage & theft excess | €0 – fully covered | High excess (often €800–2,000) blocked on your card |
| When you insure | Before you travel, at a fixed price | At the desk, under time pressure, price varies |
| Tyres, glass & undercarriage | Included | Usually excluded or charged extra |
| Deposit / card hold | None or low at most stations | Large hold blocked for the whole trip |
| Cancellation | Free cancellation | Often non-refundable |
| What you pay in total | Known the moment you book | Can climb sharply at the counter |
A basic rate can look cheaper online, but once you add proper excess cover at the desk it usually costs more than an all-inclusive booking - with none of the certainty.
