Renting a car without a credit card

In short

The credit card exists to block a deposit for the insurance excess. With an all-inclusive, zero-excess booking there is usually no deposit, so at many destinations you can rent with a debit card - or with no card hold at all. The exact rule depends on your pick-up location, so always check the conditions shown for your booking.

Why a credit card is normally required

On a standard rental, the desk pre-authorises a security deposit on a credit card - often €800–2,000 - to cover the excess you would owe after damage or theft. That hold is the real reason a credit card (in the lead driver’s name) is demanded, and why a debit card is so often refused.

How zero excess removes the deposit

An all-inclusive Cardamar booking, handled by Sunny Cars, includes comprehensive cover with zero excess. With no excess to secure, there is nothing to block on a card. That is why many all-inclusive pick-up points are no-deposit, and why a debit card is frequently accepted there.

Because conditions vary by supplier and location, the no-deposit and accepted-card details are shown for each specific pick-up point. Read them before you travel rather than assuming.

What to bring to the desk

Bring your driving licence, a passport or national ID, the lead driver’s payment card and your booking voucher. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside a non-EU licence. Completing online check-in beforehand speeds up collection and reduces the chance of an upsell.

Renting without a credit card - FAQ

Can I rent a car without a credit card?

Often yes. The credit card normally exists to block a security deposit. With an all-inclusive, zero-excess booking there is usually no deposit at all, so at many destinations a debit card - or no card hold - is enough. Always check the conditions shown for your specific pick-up location, as a few suppliers still insist on a credit card in the lead driver’s name.

Why do most rentals ask for a credit card?

To pre-authorise (block) a deposit that covers the insurance excess - often €800–2,000. Remove the excess and you remove the main reason for the card hold, which is exactly what zero-excess cover does.

Does a debit card work?

At many no-deposit locations, yes. Because there is nothing to block, a debit card in the lead driver’s name is frequently accepted. Confirm on your voucher before you travel.

What do I still need to bring?

Your driving licence, a passport or national ID, and the booking voucher. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside a non-EU licence.

Is “no deposit” the same as “no credit card”?

They go together: no deposit means there is nothing to block on a card, which is what makes renting without a credit card possible. The exact rule still depends on the supplier at your pick-up point.
