The Algarve Coast: self-drive guide

In short

The Algarve coast drive runs from Faro west to Lagos and the wild cliffs of Sagres, linking golden beaches, fishing towns and dramatic headlands on easy paved roads - about 120 km over 1-2 relaxed days. Collect an all-inclusive car at Faro; zero excess covers the sandy car parks and narrow old-town lanes.

Portugal’s southern coast is made for an easy self-drive: from Faro and its lagoon islands, the road runs west past Albufeira, the golden cliffs of Carvoeiro and Benagil, lively Lagos, and out to the lighthouse and surf of Sagres at the south-western tip of Europe.

Distances are short and the roads are good, so it suits a relaxed one or two days with plenty of beach stops. An all-inclusive Cardamar rental with zero excess is ideal for a region of sandy car parks, narrow old-town lanes and lots of stop-start exploring.

Beaches and towns along the way

Start in Faro for the Ria Formosa lagoon and its barrier islands, then head west: Albufeira’s old town and busy beaches, the cliff coves of Carvoeiro and the sea cave at Benagil, the headland of Ponta da Piedade above Lagos, and finally windswept Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente. Each town has clearly signed beach car parks.

You have two roads west: the fast A22 toll motorway (electronic tolls - your rental can be set up for them) or the slower, prettier N125 through the towns. Mix the two: motorway to cover ground, N125 for the scenic stretches.

Tolls and easy driving

The A22 Via do Infante uses electronic tolls only - there are no toll booths, so you need an electronic device or pre-registration. Ask at pick-up how your rental handles A22 tolls so charges are settled cleanly; or simply stick to the toll-free N125 if you prefer.

Otherwise this is gentle driving: short hops, good signage and plenty of parking. It is one of the best regions in Europe for a first self-drive holiday.

Where to rent and why zero excess matters

Faro - the city or the airport (FAO) - is the obvious pick-up, right at the eastern end of the coast. An all-inclusive Cardamar booking, handled by Sunny Cars, includes full insurance and zero excess, handy for sandy beach car parks and tight old-town streets.

With zero excess, a kerbed wheel in a narrow lane or a knock in a busy beach car park costs you nothing, rather than being charged against a deposit on a basic rate.

All-inclusive vs. a cheap basic rate plus counter insurance

Two cars on the same lot in The Algarve Coast can advertise very different prices. The gap is almost always insurance: an all-inclusive rate settles it up front, while a "basic" rate leaves you to buy excess cover at the desk. Here is what each really means.

All-inclusive (Cardamar) Basic rate + counter insurance
Damage & theft excess €0 – fully covered High excess (often €800–2,000) blocked on your card
When you insure Before you travel, at a fixed price At the desk, under time pressure, price varies
Tyres, glass & undercarriage Included Usually excluded or charged extra
Deposit / card hold None or low at most stations Large hold blocked for the whole trip
Cancellation Free cancellation Often non-refundable
What you pay in total Known the moment you book Can climb sharply at the counter

A basic rate can look cheaper online, but once you add proper excess cover at the desk it usually costs more than an all-inclusive booking - with none of the certainty.

The Algarve Coast self-drive - FAQ

Is the Algarve good for a self-drive trip?

Very - distances are short, roads are good and parking is easy, making it one of Europe’s most relaxed self-drive coasts. A car lets you reach the quieter beaches and the wild Sagres tip beyond the resorts.

Do I pay tolls on the Algarve A22?

Yes - the A22 Via do Infante uses electronic tolls with no booths, so you need a device or pre-registration. Ask at pick-up how your rental handles A22 charges, or use the toll-free N125 instead.

Where should I pick up a car in the Algarve?

Faro, either the city or the airport (FAO), sits at the eastern end of the coast and is the natural starting point. An all-inclusive Cardamar booking with zero excess covers the sandy car parks and narrow lanes.

When is the best time to drive the Algarve?

May-June and September-October give warm weather, swimmable seas and far lighter traffic than peak August.
